Doesn't matter if you saw a flicker or not, there was plenty of time between the smoke clearing and the audience getting a clear visual for the flicker to dissipate (if one would even show (I don't recall the Mantle's Approach having flickering shields when it was attacked)). And you want to know why you didn't see any damage? Because it's shields were up. But it still punched through heavy Forerunner armor with it's energy projectors which is highly impressive. Like I said before, I don't care what knowledge he had he was still using UNSC engines. I'm sure the first thing they did was activate the shields in case a fleet pinged off John's location and jumped there to engage the structure. Why wouldn't it's shields be up? High Charity was on red alert when the MC was blowing through there.
